Asunción City Tour: historic centre and museums

The itinerary, stop by stop

Nine stops concentrated in Asunción's historic centre, almost all of them within a few blocks of each other:

Historic Centre of Asunción

The overall setting of the tour: the strip of the city centre between the bay and Plaza de la Independencia, where almost all the buildings on the programme stand.

Casa de la Independencia

The colonial house where Paraguay's independence was plotted in 1811, now a museum. It is the point where the tour tells the story of the country's birth.

National Pantheon of Heroes

The mausoleum of the nation's founding heroes, right in the centre, with a permanent guard at the door. It is the most photographed building in Asunción.

Palacio de López

Seat of the executive branch, overlooking the bay. The programme includes a panoramic view of the palace, not a visit inside.

Metropolitan Cathedral

Asunción's cathedral, facing Plaza de la Independencia, completes the group of historic buildings in the centre.

El Cabildo Cultural Centre

The former Congress building, now a cultural centre, with art and history rooms and a view of the bay.

CAPASA Museum, the Paraguayan Cane Museum

Devoted to the sugar cane spirit that is the country's traditional drink. It is the stop that changes the tone of the tour, from the circuit of monuments to the country's productive history.

Central Railway Station

Paraguay's first railway station, with its locomotive on the platform. Asunción's railway was one of the first in South America, and the station keeps its original building.

Municipal Theatre

The city's historic theatre closes the tour.

How to get there from Ciudad del Este

There are two ways, and it is worth comparing them before you decide. The first is the Asunción Capital Tour: from Gs 1.400.000, two days and one night, with transport, a 4★ hotel and entrance tickets included, leaving from Shopping del Este. It is the option that covers the whole trip.

The second is to travel on your own and take this city tour once you are in the capital. To give you an idea of the distance: LTO's private transfer between Ciudad del Este and Silvio Pettirossi Airport in Asunción costs Gs 2.000.000 for 1 to 4 passengers, LTO's highest transfer fare. Add the Gs 150.000 for the tour, and the numbers rarely work out in favour of putting it together piece by piece.

The Asunción City Tour requires a minimum booking of 2 people, made 24 hours in advance. As it is a regular tour, departure depends on the group for that date filling up: it is worth confirming availability before you count on it.

What to bring

• Comfortable shoes: the old town is explored on foot, from one stop to the next.
• Sunscreen, a cap and water. Asunción is hot for much of the year and the tour starts at 09:00.
• Cash or a card for entrance fees and drinks that are not included.
• An ID card.
